Rainbow Robotics' RB-Y1 represents South Korea's first bimanual mobile manipulator, unveiled in April 2024 as the company leverages its collaborative robot expertise for humanoid development. The strategic importance of RB-Y1 became clear when Samsung Electronics announced becoming Rainbow's largest shareholder to accelerate humanoid robot development.
RB-Y1 combines a humanoid double-arm upper body with a wheel-type mobile base, achieving both manipulation capability and practical mobility. Each arm features 7 degrees of freedom, with a 6-axis single leg enabling 50+ cm vertical movement for tasks at various heights. Total axes reach 22 (excluding wheels), creating complex whole-body motion coordination challenges.
The platform achieves 2.5 m/s driving speed with 20-axis full-body control enabling high-speed turning and rapid acceleration. The 6-DOF leg maintains safe center of gravity control during dynamic movement. Rainbow emphasizes industrial-grade reliability, developing RB-Y1 using core components from their proven cooperative robots and AMR products.
Training uses a data arm (master) linked to the robot (slave) for demonstration-based teaching, with self-collision prevention and an established simulation environment for AI learning. Pre-orders began May 2024 with research platform pricing at $80,000 and commercial platform at $120,000. Samsung's investment signals confidence that Rainbow's robotics expertise, honed through collaborative robot development and provides a foundation for humanoid advancement.
