About R1

The Unitree R1 represents a significant step forward in making humanoid robotics accessible to developers, researchers, and educators. Standing at 1.21 meters tall and weighing just 25 kg, the R1 is designed for agility and affordability, priced at just $5,900 for the standard version.

The R1 features 26 joint modules distributed across its body: 6 joints per leg, 5 joints per arm, 2 waist joints, and 2 head joints. This configuration enables remarkable mobility, including running, jumping, cartwheeling, and dynamic recovery from falls. The robot has demonstrated impressive capabilities in martial arts demonstrations and complex movement routines.

Powered by an 8-core CPU and GPU housed in a backpack-style module, the R1 runs Unitree's UnifoLM multimodal large-language model. This enables voice and image commands, gesture recognition, and local reinforcement-learning policies without cloud latency. The EDU version supports an NVIDIA Jetson Orin computing module for enhanced AI inference.

Perception is handled through binocular stereo vision, a 4-microphone array, and twin 6-axis IMUs. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. Developers have access to a Linux-based SDK and ROS 2 interfaces for custom development.

The R1 is available in two versions: Standard for basic demonstrations and STEM education, and EDU for advanced development with NVIDIA Jetson support. With its combination of capability and cost-effectiveness, the R1 is positioned to make humanoid robotics research and education more accessible than ever before.
