About Optimus Gen 2

Tesla's Optimus Gen2, unveiled in December 2023, represents a significant advancement in the company's humanoid robotics program. Standing 180 cm tall and weighing 55 kg. A 10 kg reduction from Gen1. The robot walks 30% faster than its predecessor and can handle delicate objects like raw eggs without breaking them, demonstrating improved dexterity.

Gen2 features 11-DOF tactile hands with sensing on all fingers, Tesla-designed actuators, and a 2.3 kWh battery for all-day operation. The robot is equipped with 5G cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity for over-the-air updates and fleet learning, when robots encounter new scenarios, data flows back to Tesla's central AI training systems, and improved models distribute to all robots. The articulated toe sections and integrated force/torque sensors in human-shaped feet provide enhanced balance and stability.

As of 2025, Optimus Gen 2 units are deployed internally at Tesla factories for real-world validation, handling tasks like moving parts between workstations, organizing inventory, basic assembly operations, and quality inspection assistance. Musk stated Tesla aims to produce approximately 5,000-10,000 Optimus robots in 2025 for internal factory use, with pilot production of Optimus V3 already underway at Fremont Factory.

In November 2025, Tesla announced plans to construct a dedicated humanoid robot production facility at Gigafactory Texas capable of manufacturing 10 million Optimus robots annually by 2027. Tesla's target production cost is approximately $20,000 per unit, with initial commercial pricing expected at $100,000-$150,000. The company's vertically integrated approach, designing its own motors, sensors, batteries, and AI systems using the same neural network architecture as Full Self-Driving and positions it uniquely for cost-effective mass production.
